| The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants |
| Ken Kwapis (HE SAID, SHE SAID) directs this coming-of-age film based on the novel of the same name by Ann Brashares. This tale of lifelong friendship uses a pair of magical jeans as a metaphor for the moral support and shared happiness which forms the glue between four teenage girls. The quartet purchase the pants while shopping together before going separate ways for summer vacation. Shy, self-conscious Lena (Alexis Bledel) takes the jeans to Greece where she is visiting her grandparents. They hardly seem lucky when she falls into the sea while wearing the pants and almost drowns, only to be rescued by a local fisherman. Before recognizing that the pants helped her find love, Lena sends them along to rebellious Tibby (Amber Tamblyn) with the hope that the jeans will prove luckier for her. Tibby has stayed home in Bethesda, Maryland for the summer to make a documentary film. With a nagging job at a superstore, Tibby finds humanity and sensitivity while the jeans are in her possession. Next the pants travel to Carmen (America Ferrera), a talented writer living with her father for the summer. The jeans make her face the anger she feels toward him for leaving her and her mother, and help her find forgiveness. Finally, the jeans end up at soccer camp in Mexico with Bridget (Blake Lively), a beautiful, athletic wild child dealing with the loss of her mother. Through the jeans, Bridget discovers that ignoring the truth doesn't make it disappear.Like DIVINE SECRETS OF THE YA-YA SISTERHOOD, this moving film combines moments of comedy and with heartfelt empathy. The glowing cast of young women--Bledel, Tamblyn, Ferrera, and Lively--prove themselves in roles that show the growing pains of adolescence, while setting the stage for what are sure to be four very successful acting careers. Reviews Entertainment Weekly 06/10/2005 [The director] moves the action along with the same easy, frequent jumps between adventures that Brashares conjures on the page.USA Today 06/01/2005 [I]t is emotionally affecting....There are a couple of tear-jerker moments, but they're handled deftly, emerging naturally from an absorbing story and sympathetic portrayals.New York Times 06/01/2005 Of these four plots, the story of Carmen's blended family is by far the most consistently engaging, largely because of the vibrant presence of Ms. Ferrera... | WXIII (Wasted 13: Patlabor The Movie 3) |
| In this Takayama Fumihiko-directed anime film, two government detectives are investigating a group of bloody murders in the vicinity of Tokyo Bay. Hata, a young and handsome man whose role takes prominence, seems to have an edge over his older, fading partner, Kusumi. However, later in the film each man's competence, and their allegiance to each other, is tested and proven. After days of following dead-end leads, they receive a strange phone call that leads them straight into action. A power outage in a storage facility brings Hata and Kusumi face to face with their culprit, a genetically modified monster. Little do they know, a team of scientists on the other side of Tokyo have been experimenting with cell manipulation attempting to create a biological weapon, and they realize that they have created an absolute disaster in this monster that is now rampant in the bay. While a complicated plan is constructed and the Tokyo militia is deployed to capture the monster, the Patlabor robots are readied. But it is not until the shocking conclusion, when dark secrets about Hata's love interest are revealed, that the movie gets its final burst of energy.WXIII's beautifully drawn settings--all in a gray, film-noirish Tokyo--mimic the look of actual film and create a very realistic atmosphere. For instance, reflections on the windshields of cars, shadows cast on the sidewalk by trees, complicated computer programs and tv broadcasts; are detailed flawlessly. On the whole, WXIII is both visually and mentally captivating. Reviews Los Angeles Times 01/10/2003 ...A dazzling Japanese animated feature....The film's striking look verges on the photo-realistic overlaid with a noirish atmosphere...New York Times 01/10/2003 ...A visually absorbing futuristic fantasy that evokes a paranoid world choking on its own technology....Terrific in ambience... | John Cusack and Diane Lane star in this romantic comedy titled after a personal ad on the Internet. Eight months after getting divorced, downtrodden preschool teacher Sarah (Lane) is wary of re-entering the dating pool. Seeing her reluctance as a cry for help, Sarah's large, jovial family plans an intervention. While Sarah does not appreciate being bombarded by photographs and phone numbers of potential mates (half of whom are married), even she can see that her most meaningful relationship should not be with her brother's dog--a loveable Newfoundland named Mother Theresa. After Sara answers personal ads with less-than-thrilling results, her sister Carol (Elizabeth Perkins) takes things into her own hands, secretly posting an online-dating profile on Sarah's behalf. In a familiar montage of first-date scenarios, Sarah meets one unappealing prospective bachelor after another: one who can't stop talking about himself, another who can't stop crying, one with an affinity for bondage, etc. But when she meets recently divorced Jake (Cusack), something clicks. While their meeting is somewhat awkward, it makes enough of an impression on Jake that he wants a second chance. From here, the two embark on a clumsy courtship complicated by misunderstandings, mishaps, and another equally charming suitor, Bob (Dermot Mulroney). While doing her best to navigate the unfamiliar world of modern-day romance, Sarah learns that sometimes finding Mr. Right means taking a chance. Christopher Plummer and Stockard Channing are excellent in their respective roles as Sarah's widowed father, Bill, and his new girlfriend (a compulsive Internet-dater) Dolly. Reviews USA Today 07/29/2005 DOGS is all about laughs....Raised to a higher level by the presence of John Cusack, an actor who embodies warmth, wit, intelligence and low-key charm.Rolling Stone 08/11/2005 It's a frisky romantic comedy with a great title and wonderfully appealing performances. | Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous |
| Notes Widescreen Picking up soon after the events of the first film, this inspired sequel opens with agent Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) back in action against a team of lady bank robbers, only to have her cover blown by her newfound fame. In an effort to capitalize on the publicity--and as a result of being dumped by her boyfriend from the first film--Gracie lets herself be made into the feel-good ambassador of the FBI, helped by the staggeringly hip Joel (Dietrich Bader) and his stylists. The change is not good for the brash Ms. Hart, however, who is soon appearing on morning television and dispensing fashion tips instead of girl-power platitudes. Of course this phase doesn't last long; some goons out in Las Vegas kidnap Miss Congeniality (Heather Burns) and host Stan Fields (William Shatner), prompting Hart, with her intensely angry bodyguard, Sam Fuller (Regina King), to strap on her guns and get back in the game. Her method of operation includes beating up Dolly Parton, defying a sexist FBI bigwig (Treat Williams), and faking cramps. At one point she disguises herself as an old Jewish woman in a wheelchair, and later she's a Las Vegas showgirl doing Proud Mary at a drag club.Bullock's good-natured performance recalls the old-school comedic talents of Bob Hope or Barbara Stanwyck; she effortlessly makes Gracie Hart a unique and complex woman who is capable, sarcastic, intuitive, impressionable, and a secretly lonely tomboy. Also a plus is the refreshing lack of a male romantic interest as Hart and Fuller don't need some handsome guy to ride to their rescue and they aren't going to let sexual discrimination stop them from getting the job done. Reviews Sight and Sound 05/01/2005 Bullock's flair for physical comedy is used to efficient effect throughout the film.Entertainment Weekly 04/01/2005 [E]njoyable....[Bullock and King] hint at the start of a beautiful comedy relationship...USA Today 03/24/2005 CONGENIALITY's FBI klutz turned beauty queen is shrewdly tailored for Bullock....The actresses are nicely teamed... | Million Dollar Baby |
| Released a little over a year after the grand success of his Oscar-winning feature MYSTIC RIVER, Clint Eastwood returns to the director's chair for MILLION DOLLAR BABY. Eastwood also stars, in the role of Frankie Dunn, a down-on-his-luck former boxing manager who spends the twilight years of his life running a small, dilapidated gym in downtown Los Angeles. Frankie's previous career was blighted by an injury to one of his prize fighters, Scrap (Morgan Freeman), who lost the sight in his right eye during a particularly brutal bout; Scrap now wiles away the hours working as a cleaner in Frankie's gym. Wary of similar occurrences being inflicted on the prestigious young talent that passes before him, Frankie lets a succession of great boxers slip through his fingers. But when the brash, confident young boxer Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) strides into the gym, Frankie's life is irretrievably altered. Initially refusing to train Maggie due to her gender and age, Frankie relents when faced with her tenacity, spirit, and burning ambition. The combination of Maggie's talent and Frankie's tutelage paves the way for the adroit fighter to rise steadily through the ranks of women's boxing, with the unlikely coupling forming a genuinely touching bond in the process.Clint Eastwood has crafted a boxing film fit to stand alongside classics such as RAGING BULL and ROCKY with MILLION DOLLAR BABY. The scenes between Eastwood and Freeman are a delight to watch, with the two old hands pulling off masterfully understated performances as a couple of men teetering on the brink of failure. Likewise, Swank puts in a powerful turn as Maggie, further emphasizing her penchant for unusual roles, and perhaps even bettering her incredible, Oscar-winning showing as Teena Brandon in BOYS DON'T CRY. Reviews Sight and Sound 03/01/2005 The washed-out colour photography, the seedy urban locations, the peripheral low-life characters all give the film a pleasingly noir feel.Uncut 02/01/2005 When this heroic underdog fable turns really dark, its grip strengthens yet further, Noble, savage and brave.Premiere 02/01/2005 [A] remarkably appealing success story full of heart and humor and poignancy, with Swank as winning as she's ever been.Rolling Stone 12/30/2004 [A] stunningly drawn map of the human heart disguised as a boxing yarn....[Eastwood's] stripped -down performance -- as powerful as anything he's ever done -- has a rugged, haunting beauty. The same goes for the movie.Entertainment Weekly 12/24/2004 The chemistry between Eastwood and Swank is touching and spiky and true. It is also gently, unstatedly romantic.USA Today 12/15/2004 [A] grim knockout of a boxing movie with multiple jolts....Eastwood directs and stars in one of his top performances...Los Angeles Times 12/15/2004 [T]he director's most touching, most elegiac work yet....It's got some of the emotional daring of the great melodramas of Hollywood's golden age...New York Times 12/15/2004 [T]he best movie released by a major Hollywood studio this year....It is a quiet, intimately scaled three-person drama directed in a patient, easygoing style...
